Why I sew
My name is Laura Cotugno and I love to sew.
When I was 20 years old, I left my hometown of San Francisco and headed east to Colorado. After getting settled, I decided I wanted to try fixing my clothes…shortening sleeves, hemming pants, repairing faulty zippers, etc. So, I went out and purchased a Montgomery Ward sewing machine, and gave it a try.
Things were going pretty well with my sewing, so a few years later, when my first child came along, I made curtains for his room, as well as a blanket, pajamas, fabric books, and a few stuffed toys. When neighbors came by with their kids to visit, they asked where I got those things. When I told them “I made them,” they were surprised, and many asked me to make some for their kids and their rooms. That was the beginning of my career as a seamstress, and I have never looked back.
Since then
Throughout the years, I have sewn for thousands of people. From curtains, comforters, and throw pillows to christening gowns, suits, dresses, and repairs, I have done it all. Have you been to see a Broadway show in Denver over the past 20 years? If so, you have seen a costume I have worked on. And yes, I have met The Rolling Stones, Mariah Carey, Sting, Rene Flemming, Chuck Berry, Crystal Gayle, Lyle Lovett, and many other entertainers, backstage, while working on their wardrobes.
Lately, I have been making prototypes for local clothing designers. I have such variety in my work, and I love it!
When I’m not sewing, I spend time with Paul, my husband, walking the dogs, biking, and traveling around this beautiful state. And I am fortunate that my 3 children all live close by!
